Currently, my main research question is:
Which mechanisms determine what we remember?
This encompasses neurocognitive processes during encoding, maintenance, consolidation, and memory reconstructions due to emotional and social factors.
Another question I am greatly interested in is:
Do dreams have a function?
In the same vein: What determines dream content, and how are dreams related to memory consolidation?
Finally, I would like to find out:
How is our self built by autobiographical memory?
We are who we are because we made specific experiences, and integrated them with self-referential processes into a narrative self. But how exactly does that work?
Methods
1. Intracranial EEG in patients with epilepsy and psychiatric diseases
2. Functional MRI in healthy subjects, simultaneous EEG/fMRI
3. Behavioral experiments
4. Analysis of data from animal studies
5. Thinking (developing new conceptual frameworks by integrating neuroscience, cognitive psychology and psychoanalysis)
